Nicholas has become the sixth hurricane of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season as it nears a Texas Gulf Coast landfall.
The National Hurricane Center upgraded Nicholas to a hurricane as its center was only 20 miles southeast of Matagorda, Texas.
The hurricane watch has been upgraded to a hurricane warning from Port O’Connor to Freeport, Texas.
The center of Nicholas will move ashore overnight. If it remains a hurricane, it would be the second mainland U.S. hurricane landfall of the season, just over two weeks after Ida’s devastating Category 4 landfall in Louisiana.
Nicholas has already produced flooding from both storm surge and heavy rain along the Texas coast.
