A new covenant with BETTER promises and a SUPERIOR Mediator: Israel’s constant and persistant disobedience proved the need for it. Why else would Jeremish have promised such? (Though he wasn’t the only one to do so; much less the first.)
After painting an exciting picture of coming restoration in chapters 30–31, Jeremiah promised Judah & Israel a New Covenant in the “Last Days.” It is this very promise that H.W. cites and argues from in Heb.8.
We’ll examine some of they key phrases. What significance or impact should they have on the Jewish Christians who first read them?
• A new covenant
• Out of the land of Egypt
• I did not care for them (or, MT reading)
• Into their minds…on their hearts
• Their God…My people
• Not teach: “Know the Lord”
• Merciful
• Remember sins no more
Looking forward to discussing these things with you!
